Doing Democracy

Leonard Freed, March on Washington, Washington DC, 1963, https://luag.lehigh.edu/exhibitions/doing-democracy-photography-george-stephanopoulos-collection

This image is taken in 1963 in the nation’s capital. Freedom buses and freedom trains brought over a quarter-million marchers. Everyone was united in the cause of fighting for civil rights for blacks. This march was the largest of its kind at the time. This image holds significance because it does a great job of capturing the feelings of people in the United States in 1963. The faces of the individuals in the image look sad and frustrated. The fight for equality was not an easy one. The photographer did a nice job framing the event, we can clearly see the signs and a large number of people present.
