Danny Lyon, 1963, Gelatin Silver Print
This image is of John Lewis seemingly leaning against a wall, inside a glass door. You can see a disappointed expression on his face, possibly interpreted as frustrated. Through the glass there is a blur of a crowd, as well as another individual on the other side of the door. This photo was likely taken following a protest where perhaps things did not go as planned, or no change was met, judging by the look on his face. I really like the composition of this photo, as John Lewis is off center. The black and white also builds contrast in the photo, making John the main subject, but also creating depth through the figures in the background. I also like how the background is out of focus because this draws the viewers eye even more into John’s expression.
