Well, Well, Well (10/19)

Flip Schulke, American, 1930 – 2008. Doctor Listening to a Patient’s Lungs. c.1960. Artstor, library.artstor.org/asset/28163279

This image, entitled “Doctor Listening to a Patient’s Lungs”, was taken by Flip Schulke in 1960. The central theme of LUAD’s exhibit is (as guessed from the title), Wellness, and explores the idea that picturing “wellness” takes on many forms, and often exists in tension changing bodies: growing, confronting illness, or adapting to change. This photograph is a good capture of this theme and could cover the idea of confronting illness or growing. We see the doctor checking an older man’s lungs with a stethoscope to make sure that he is healthy. This photo made me think of COVID-19 because of the fact that it has to deal (in part) with our lungs. While I am clearly aware that COVID was not prevalent in the 1960’s, because of the current circumstances, this photograph immediately stuck out to me for that reason. Capturing the photo from this angle gives it more life and a better picture of the interaction between the man and the doctor. Many of the other photos in both Exhibit 1 and Exhibit 2 are more subtly related to the idea of physical wellness but this is one of the only ones that stood out to me as a clear representation of the theme amongst the other photos.
