Civil Rights Movement

This photo was taken during the height of the civil rights movement in NYC. It seems as if it is set in a diner and the woman on the right is unaware she is being photographed. I can’t help but notice the expressions on the women’s faces. The one on the right has a look of disgust and the one on the left seems uncomfortable and nervous. I presume their emotions stem from a black woman being in a white establishment as there are other white people in the photo. Racism played a terrible role in our countries history and the ignorance that black people faced is showing up clearly in the photo. There is no amicability between these two women, there is a palpable tension that has been captured. Photos like this are important because they are a visual representation of adversity and a past behavoir American will never too.
