Ansel Easton Adams

Ansel Easton Adams, San Dunes, Oceano, California, ca. 1950, printed 1978, Gelatin Silver print, Photographs, Gift of Ansel and Virginia Adams, 1979, acc 1979.5858.15

I love the composition of this photo. The white highlights on the top of the sand dunes create a great contrast against the darker cracks. You can tell that the sun was hitting the sand from the right side of the photo. I also really like how at the bottom of the picture the image is clear and you can see a lot of detail, however, as your eye moves upwards, following the lines of the sand, the picture begins to blur. The detail is so pronounced in the bottom half of the picture that you can even see the sand’s gradient effect it has on the picture.
