Composition and Lighting, Eva

Edward Weston

Pepper No. 35, Edward Weston

The photographer was able to create a beautiful picture with excellent use of lighting and composition. I would say that the light source of this image was most likely natural light that was well controlled in order to give certain creases of the pepper lovely streaks of bright light. You are really able to tell that the texture of the pepper is smooth and shiny by the way the light frames its structure. In addition, the composition of this photo adds to the success of it. In the bottom left, we see whats left of the peppers stem as a main focal point of the picture. The curvature of the pepper leads our eyes down a winding path up to the top of the image where the main body of the pepper is. This path is mostly created but the streaks of light discussed earlier. Both light and composition are what make this common pepper into a successful photographic subject.
