Gary Winnogrand – Street Photography

The following image was captured by Gary Winogrand in Central Park, New York City (1967)

I would say that the main reason for this photos success is its unique composition and contrast. Although some would say the the background of this image is very busy due to all of the people, I think it tells a good story and gives insight into the setting of where the main subject is. Ofcourse in this case, the main subject is the woman holding a string diagonally over her head. Her facial expression and clothing gives her a unique sense of personality alone. The way her body leads you from the lower left of the image to the upper right helps create a strong balance within the image compositionally. As for the color, the photographer clearly wanted to accentuate the components of the image without any vibrant colors distracting from the key parts of the photo. An intriguing contrast is presented especially due to her very white shirt among the abundance of grey and black coats in the back.
