UNICEF is a United Nations organization that supports “child health and nutrition, safe water and sanitation, quality education and skill building” as well as combats the mistreatment and ill treatment of laboring children.
The young boy in the photo is a 10 year old from Afghanistan who works cleaning automotive parts. He “works six days a week as a mechanic’s helper” and works with harmful and hazardous chemicals such as gasoline, kerosine, and diesel which could cause terrible skin damage.
What makes the work effective in communicating the terrible lives that some unfortunate children have to live, is the expression of the boy’s face as well as the filthy working conditions he works in. He and the parts he cleans are in focus which highlights what he works with, but the combination of a his depressed expression and the connection between his pale skin tone and all the colors of the surrounding brings a depressing nature to this photo that makes you sympathize with him.
