UNICEF

I have heard about UNICEF since I was in grade school. My school used to give us UNICEF boxes to bring with us while trick or treating. Looking back, this is a very creative way to raise money for such a worthy cause. UNICEF is dedicated to bettering the lives of impoverished children. According to a UNICEF stat, 150 million children worldwide are involved in child labor. There are different versions of labor including child soldiers, trafficking, traditional labor. Factors such as age, socio-economic status, and age influence what kind of labor the child is involved in. The process of eliminating child labor is painful and tedious because most organizations that employ children hide it well. This photo intrigued me because it is a more modern version of Lewis Hine’s work. Instead of working in a factory like Hines photos often depict, the boy is cutting metal pipes. It tells a powerful story. A boy sitting alone invested in his work. The fact that he is using a power tool at such a young age was also upsetting to me. I think that organizations such as UNICEF need to have better funding so that their reach into child labor can be expanded.
