Long DOF (Diane Arbus)

This photo is entitled “A widow in her bedroom on 55th St.” and was taken by Diane Arbus in 1963. This photo shows a clear example of how long depth of focus is used to pull the viewers eyes towards the entire photo and not just a specific object within the frame of the photo. While in this case, there is a woman in the photo, Diane wanted to capture the context of the room in the photograph for added texture and tone. Long Depth is when there is a larger/deeper range of focus. We know that this photo is taken in Long Depth because the entire frame is clear and one object isn’t standing out while the others are blurred. Overall, the use of Long Depth was a smart and strategic way to bring out the color contrast, shadowing, overall context, and unique location of the photo.
