The image on the left is an example of short depth of field. I think with portraits like this where the focus is supposed to be on the woman’s eyes or “eyeliner, look much better when done with a short depth of field. There is hardly any focus on the background image but there are still hints that the photograph was taken outside where the viewer is able to make out a tree or two. No matter what the composition is created to focus solely on the woman, who is centered in the frame, drawing that attention to the darkness of her eyes, hair, jacket etc. The image on the right is an example of long depth of field. The use of long depth of field was a good choice in this case because the creator wanted the darkness and emptiness of the theater to be the main focus. So with the longer depth of field, the viewer is able to see all the way down the rows and rows of empty seats. The photograph captures the theater in its entirety which is again, why long depth of field was the better choice.
