The short depth of field is the kitchen corner that is on the left by Walker Evans. By shooting in a shorter distance, you can really see the details of this kitchen corner, like every piece of wood of the wall, the bowed down curve of the seat, the hanging towel, and every branch on the broom.
The long depth of field is the caste of Disney land that is on the right by Dian Arbus. You can see very clearly the construction of the towel even though that is far away from the water. And you see the swan that is close in the water, and you can see the detail of the lamp that is hanging out of the door gate which is in the middle of the picture.
Short depth of field is when the nearest object/subject is in focus and the background is out of focus. So the Evans example would not really fit in this case. Also the mist in the Arbus covers a lot of the background detail.
