Blog Post 8/30

This untitled photograph was taken somewhere between 1952 and 1955 by Seydou Keita. What stood out to me the most in this picture were the children’s expressions. The little girl has a very confused look on her face, as if she is scared and does not know what to do. The older girl seems sad, like she is being forced to pose for these pictures. One thing that fascinates me is that despite their facial expressions, they are wearing these elaborate, fancy dresses and jewelry. Even the little girl who only looks a few years old has earrings and bracelets on. Besides the sadness I felt when I saw their faces, something else that was hard to see was the little girl’s body. She seems very underweight and like she does not have enough to eat, which absolutely breaks my heart and makes me feel so much more connected to this picture.

  1. Compositionally how do the dresses, background fabric and chair work to create interest while focusing attention on their faces? Good description of the younger girl’s expression.
