This is a very interesting portrait by Irving Penn. It depicted many portrait of different person with different jobs. And I choose this specific one, because it really showed me how a deep-sea diver would look like. At first, I thought it was a portrait of an astronaut, but then, looking at the name, I found out that this is a portrait of a deep-sea diver. If you pay more attention towards his face, you can see that the round glass that covers his face is popped open. Also, you can see that there are many metals tied around his waist, and the boot have a thick layer of metal as base to keep the man on the ground in the ocean. And I believe that the tube that’s in front of his chest going out of frame is used as air pumping to keep the balance the air in his gear and the pressure in the sea. However, I do wonder what is he holding on his left hand.

Good description of the identifying features of a 1951 deep-sea diver’s suit.
