I find this photo intriguing for a multitude of reasons. The first is the sepia tint to this photo. It gives it an aged look when the woman in the photo has clearly youthful skin. I think this is an interesting juxtaposition between young and old. The position of her hands on her bare neck and chest represents women’s sexuality and power. The way her hands are gently resting on her body is aesthetically pleasing but her face and jaw are looking away. She has a strong bone structure which indicates that she has a beautiful face, but she won’t allow it to be seen. There is an element of mystery to this photo and it only becomes more present the more you stare at it. The main reason I chose this photo is that I found out that the woman is no other than Georgia O’Keeffe, the famous artist. I enjoy the cycle of an artist creating art by photographing another artist. It’s like a never-ending matrix of art and beauty. Though Stieglitz and O’Keeffe create different types of art, they are both notable in their craft. I think that the combination of their skills is what makes this photo so masterful. O’Keeffe has mastered the element of capturing the beauty and innocence of flowers, I believe that she channeled this energy while being the subject in this particular photo. This photo is relevant today because its simplicity makes it beautiful. It could be digitalized for a myriad of products to sell such as perfume or jewelry. This photo will only get better with age.
