Documentary Photography

Genesis: Dinka Man : Southern Sudan, 2006 : Sebastian Salgado

This photo was taken in southern Sudan and it is a great depiction of documentary photographs. People say a photo is worth 1000 words and this one definitely is. This man is covered in scares probably from being a slave of some sort. According to Salgado, this piece is a part of a collection that shines a light on the adverse effect of globalization. This photo in particular was supposed to represent the liberation of the body and spirit. The clay on his body clearly represents a ritual of some kind which is only brought out more by the black and white edit.

“Czech hedgehog” : Omaha Beach : Bob Capa : 1944

Bob Capa is a photojournalist who dedicated this album to taking photographs of D-Day. D-day was one of the most important military moments in America’s history. These raw photos are the perfect representation of what those men experienced on that day. If it weren’t for Bob Capa, people wouldn’t have a physical visual to picture when hearing the war stories.

I Shall Be Released : 2015 : Richard Mosse

Richard Mosse is a photographer who focuses on war-torn areas of the world and takes beautiful photos of the landscape to create a contrast between destruction and beauty. He wants to create a psychedelic landscape within the chaos of war. These photos are important because he is able to capture the beauty of the landscape without revealing the dark truth behind the image.
