This is a stunning photograph by Seydou Keita. The image depicts a young African woman sitting on a bench with her arms carefully supporting her child, or perhaps a younger sibling as the image is categorized under “Families”. The small child, seemingly a toddler, stands on the bench, her body resting against the woman’s. The woman and the child have an almost identical facial expression in this portrait, both have slightly parted lips and are staring directly at the camera. Both of these girls are dressed beautifully. The woman to the right dawns a patterned head scarf that wraps around her head and comes to a bow at the top. The same woman’s dress has a similar pattern only this time the viewer is able to make out the different animal forms that dot the dress. Her sleeves are large and ruffled and she wears beautifully large necklaces, one that sits close to her neck and one that drapes down past her chest. The child that leans against her is wearing an similarly styled dress; ruffled sleeves with an intricate pattern. The child also has on earrings, two bracelets; one on each wrist, and two anklets; one on each ankle. The backdrop for the photograph seems to be just a relatively blank curtain, which focuses the image on the two beautiful girls.
