The lighting conditions make each crease of the hardened lava very crisp and defined, forming chasms that, without context, could lead the observer to believe they are looking at a picture of a monotone mountain range or even a wrinkled cloth. The many contrasting direction lines, with the help of the shadows, help to distinguish the object’s proportions as well as draw the observer’s eyes all over the picture.
