This abstract photograph by Aaron Siskind is of volcanic lava, evidently cooled down and hardened into a black solid. The lighting conditions make each crease of the hardened lava very crisp and defined, forming chasms that, without context, could lead the observer to believe they are looking at a picture of a monotone mountain range or even a wrinkled cloth. The many contrasting direction lines, with the help of the shadows, help to distinguish the object’s proportions as well as draw the observer’s eyes all over the picture.
